We have come a long way on this island in terms of cocktail culture and these days the offering in Dublin brings a big game. History of The Cocktail….

The history of cocktails can be traced back to England in the 17th century, but it wasn’t until it reached America that it really took off. The first definition of a Cocktail was written in New York in 1806, it defines them as “A stimulating liquor composed of any kind of sugar, water, and bitters.”. A hundred year later in the Speakeasy bars of New York the revolution of cocktail culture really began during the prohibition of the 1920’s. It was during that time that many of the cocktails we know today were born! Drinks recipies like the Old Fashioned, Espresso Martinis and Long Island Iced teas were first conceived during this time and havent left us since. Its crazy to think that recipies which came out of an ban on alcohol in america and the resulting illegal drinking culture that was forced underground are still with us today. Its just goes to show how much people really love a good drink of spirits, juices, bitters and syrups.

Coming up with our O’Connells Cocktail Menu:

When coming up with our O’Connells cocktail menu, we wanted to try our best to keep it simple and enjoyable. With a lot of the cocktails being old school classics and some having a nod to the modern favourites. This idea can be seen for instance in our martini range. With the Espresso Martini being one of our more popular cocktails, an important focus for us when coming up with the menu was being able to use more of the premium spirits in our cocktails. This was so our customers could enjoy the best quality spirits and liquors. The quality ingredients paired with the experience and passion for mixology from our bar team has lead us to thankfully having the majority of our customers pleasantly surprised with our excellent menu.

Since coming up with this fantastic menu we have had visitors from near and far enjoy our selection. We have made thousands of cocktails over the last few months all to a high standard using quality ingredients freshly prepared. We dont cut corners when it comes to cocktails and all of our customers agree our menu has some of the best, tastiest cocktails in Howth.
